Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple, Thrissur
The best-known Krishna temple in Kerala, sometimes called the Dwaraka of the South, run by the Guruvayur Devaswom under the Government of Kerala. Kerala Tourism gives the temple as open from 3:00 AM to 12:30 PM and 4:30 PM to 9:15 PM. History of Guruvayur Temple
Kerala Tourism records that the central shrine was reconstructed in 1638, and its sanctum walls carry 17th-century murals. Wikipedia records a Dutch raid in 1716 that damaged the western gopuram, and the invasion of Tipu Sultan in 1789, when the idol was taken away for safekeeping and reinstalled in 1792. A fire in 1970 destroyed the surrounding structures but spared the sanctum.
The temple is also part of India's social history. The Guruvayur Satyagraha, led by K. Kelappan and A. K. Gopalan, campaigned for the entry of all Hindus regardless of caste, and the temple was opened to all Hindus on 2 June 1947.

Why Guruvayur matters to Hindus
Guruvayurappan is a standing four-armed form of Vishnu holding the conch, discus, mace and lotus, worshipped as Krishna. Tradition holds that Guru and Vayu installed the idol here, which gives the town its name, and Kerala Tourism calls the temple the Dwaraka of the South.
The temple is a major venue for Hindu weddings, and offerings such as Thulabharam are part of daily life there. Its Ekadasi and the Chembai music festival draw musicians and devotees from across the south.

Best time to visit Guruvayur
Guruvayur has a monsoon climate: June and July bring around 700 mm of rain a month, summer averages about 35°C and winter about 20°C. The drier months after the monsoon are the most comfortable for a visit that involves standing barefoot in a queue.
The festival calendar decides the crowds. The annual Utsavam in February and March opens with the Aanayottam elephant race, and Guruvayur Ekadasi brings a month of celebration and the Chembai music festival; Ashtamirohini and Vaishakam are also major. Within the day, the temple opens at 03:00 and closes from 12:30 to 16:30.
