History of Srisailam Mallikarjuna Temple

Wikipedia records inscriptional evidence for the temple from the 2nd century onward, with the main Mallikarjuna shrine dating to the 7th century. The complex covers two hectares inside walls 183 by 152 metres and 8.5 metres high, with four gopurams.

The major expansion came under the Vijayanagara Empire, beginning with King Harihara I in the 14th century, and the Mukha Mandapa hall dates from that period. The Devasthanam itself notes that no historical evidence fixes the origin of Srisailam, which Hindu tradition places before the Satya Yuga.

Why Srisailam matters to Hindus

Srisailam is one of the few places where a Jyotirlinga and a Shakti Peetha share one temple: Shiva as Mallikarjuna and the goddess as Bhramaramba, whom the Devasthanam describes as Shiva and Shakti. That makes it sacred to both Shaiva and Shakta traditions.

Maha Shivaratri is the temple's principal festival, and the month of Karthika brings some of its heaviest crowds.
